Bad Eats ""en croute"" 9/26/2010

If overpriced, inferior quality ingredients, poorly prepared, served with a doze of snobbism, in a pretentious atmosphere, is what you are looking for, Georges' is for you. The bread basket was visually stunning, and if all we desired was to bask in it's beauty, it would have been great, unfortunately we were hungry. The bread was hard and dry. The ""epis"", (wheat stalk shaped loaves), were so hard, you could have broken a tooth, if you foolishly attempted to bite into one. The bread was served with only an oil dispenser, that did not dispense. No herbs, no seasonings, no salt or pepper. The dinner itself was also unpalatable. There were three of us, all the dishes were loaded with salt. We actually love salty foods, but these courses were way too salty, even for us. My soft-shell crab, that I normally love, was smothered in blue cheese. Not only all you could taste was the blue cheese, no taste of crab left, but it had soaked, and moistened the soft-shell, making it tough and un-chewable. The steak and frittes, was a small, inexpensive, half gristle, cut of meat, served with greasy fries. The New York strip, was small, salty, like everything else, and cooked well, opposed to medium rare as requested. Dessert, was unremarkable at $9.00 each. The service was snobbish and un-warm. Even though two thirds of our meals were left unconsumed, we were never asked if the meals met with our satisfaction. I don't understand the good reviews! High prices do not guarantee a good repast! Are the high prices, snobby waiters and pompous surroundings, deluding the clientele into thinking they had a good meal? I am in my middle fifties, and have been lucky enough to enjoy meals all over the world, some fabulously wonderful, some not so great. I've had top quality, and humble ingredients, both expertly prepared. I have learned long ago, not to equate price with quality. Georges' will go down in my culinary experience, as one of the worst value, incompetently prepared meals, I have ever had the displeasure of partake of. We left unsatisfied, unhappy, puzzled by the good reviews attributed to this restaurant. Maybe they were having a bad day? Maybe the chef was on vacation? Maybe the salt shaker just slipped of his fingers, it will remain an unsolved mystery. We, will never know, go back to Georges', or recommend it to any of our friends and family. Our enemies, if we had any, now that, is a different story. more
