I interviewed three different surgeons when I found out I had breast cancer and needed surgery. Dr. Kristi Funk stood out among the candidates for several reasons. Her warmth, the fact that she engaged me in conversation to understand what my fears and desires were, and her patience in explaining my options in straightforward language. I just wanted the cancer gone and said "I don't care how my breasts look afterward." But Kristi said that SHE cared, and she would do her best to remove the cancer, while making me look as good as possible. She did both with flying colors. My surgery was a lumpectomy and you can barely see the scar. I am 4 years clear of the cancer, and although Kristi cares for many patients, I still feel like I get personal treatment when I see her for my checkups. When I first interviewed Kristi I asked her why she chose to become a breast surgeon. She told me it was an area where she felt she could make a real difference in peoples' lives, while also having a life of her own, outside her work. It was a wonderfully honest answer.
