The Record Store 'Experience' 7/1/2010

I'm a regular at this Valley store that sells new and used vinyl, CDs and DVDs. Uppers: They have a pretty good selection and the prices are usually reasonable. I've bought 'used' CDs, still in their plastic wrapping, starting at $5.99 and new starting at $7.99. New release stuff is usually $10-$13. I've never had a scratched or unplayable used CD. The frequent buyer card gives you a stamp for each disc you buy and after 10 stamps they give you $7.99 off your bill or choose a disc for free ($7.99 or less). The tunes they play in store are usually good. Downers: It's poorly organized, doesn't have much turnover and many of the staff are surly at best. I've never sold anything here but I once made the mistake of asking what was playing on the store's stereo and got a withering look for not knowing - it was Ash. Although visiting just about once a week only one of the regular staff acknowledges that they've ever seen me before. Attempts to engage in chat at the register are met with the briefest of replies. I once saw a kid try to sell a dozen CDs, only three or four of which they wanted to buy. He asked where else he might try to sell them - a reasonable question - and the kid was much derided after he'd left the store. This is good old fashioned record store snobbery at its finest. This is not the place to drop into to pick up that latest piece of throwaway pop or gangsta rap; their main business is alternative, rock and jazz. But I can browse away an hour or two easily and have found some bargains. Pros: Some bargains, frequent buyer program Cons: Staff, slow stock rotation more
