Shang not worth the price and underwhelmed 6/19/2010

We went to Shang because we saw Susur Lee on Top Chef Masters and was quite impressed by the scores he was getting. We were not very impressed by the decor when we walked in\r \r We ordered the Singapore slaw and hot and sour soup as appetizers. The Singapore slaw was quite good with a lot of complex flavors and was mixed tableside. The hot and sour was extremely sour...and for one bowl (rice bowl size) it was $10 which officially makes it the most expensive hot and sour soup I've ever ordered. It totally wasn't worth it and i've had better from take out places. It was also extremely salty. The two dishes we got were the ""Top Chef chicken curry"" and scallop and shrimp dish. The Chicken curry was good but i felt like it was missing something...and sitting on top of the polenta made the texture a bit strange. The chicken was tender, however. the shrimp and scallop was pretty good. but again at $29 you can get a bigger and better tasting dishes in Chinatown. \r \r The dessert was devil food cake with ice cream. the devil food cake was a bit dry. There were that many selections for dessert\r \r Service was very good, they refilled our water quite often and were courteous. However, given the price, tastiness of the dishes, and size of the portions (by the way a bowl of jasmine rice runs $4 - no one eats Chinese food without rice!) it's simply wasn't worth it and it didn't live up to my expectations. Pros: good chinese food Cons: not even close to being worth it; chinatown has better food more
