Fancy new office comes with a huge price tag to customers. 4/27/2010

I was referred to this endodontist by my general dentist to have him finish a root canal on my son's tooth. My dentist was nervous about finishing it because my son had an open root, so referred us to Dr. Sonnenberg, as we do not have any endodontists in my county in Wyoming. I took a day off work and traveled to his office four hours away. The office was conveniently located, and in a new building. The staff was friendly and Dr. Sonnenberg explained what he was going to perform on my son. I think the procedure went fine (time will tell), and after I had sat in the waiting room for 2.5 hours, the biling person didn't take any opportunity to talk to me about the charges, or my portion of the charges to be paid. Instead, she left the office and a different person summoned me to the window to discharge us. I was informed the total charges were $1390.00, which is outrageous even for an endodontist. To further the ridiculous, the lady tried to tell me that they wouldn't bill my insurance, even though there was no reason for that as my insurance accepts billing from providers. After I explained that, she told me my portion of the payment was $575.00 due today, and I asked to pay half. The only way I was allowed to do that was by giving my credit card and allowing her to make a photocopy of it (which is incredulous considering the amount of identity theft these days). So in my opinion, no matter how the endodontist wants to justify his charges, they are beyond outrageous. Also, the strong arming of payment when I don't even know what my insurance is going to cover yet is extremely unprofessional. If you need an endodontist to perform a root canal, see one who isn't robbing customers blind to pay for his fancy new office. We were the only patients in this office for 3 hours and that should have tipped me off that maybe we should seek care elsewhere. I also made the mistake of assuming that the charges would be reasonable and customary. I should have forced a quote before I let him proceed. I won't make that mistake again. Pros: New office Cons: Outrageous price, strong armed for payment. more
