We go to The Crab Shack several times per year simply because it looks west across the James River and is the most beautiful place to eat and watch a sunset in Newport News, maybe the Tidewater area. Service has always been good or better, and the bartender is more than competent. Sadly, the food is merely average. There are many locations in the area that do better. I have had the sampler as well as many other offerings and nothing has ever made me go, Wow!... except the view. On warm days, you can sit on the enclosed deck while listening to the river wash the rocks beneath the restaraunt. I will go back, but will always hope the cook has spent some time recording ideas from the food network.
