To be fair, Hoffland takes good pictures, but the rest of our experience was disappointing. We primarily chose him to shoot our wedding based on the beautiful albums advertised on his website (although if you follow them over time you will see he changes the dates of the albums to make them look more recent). However, our album looked like the pictures were just thrown together on an all-white background, with little to no evidence of any effort. There were no interesting backgrounds, cropping, or photo manipulations that are obvious on the albums he displays, even though we specifically requested these things (he requests input regarding how we want the album to be laid out, but he obviously doesn’t pay much attention to these requests). The last couple of pages had 8-10 pictures crammed together on a single page, as if he was running out of space and time and just didn’t want to deal with it anymore. We tried to change the album into something more like those on his website (based on our own revisions), and he charged us an additional 50% of the album cost (>$500). And the album is only part of the disappointing experience. From day 1 (as soon as he had our deposit), his communication was dismal. My husband and I would place bets as to whether or not e-mails or phone calls would be returned. Often weeks would go by before we would hear back (if we even obtained a response). While the wedding photos were good, they did not cover several things we specifically asked them to shoot, and approximately 25% of our guests were not documented either at all or outside of the few posed family photos. This included immediate family and several key players in the wedding. And there was at least an hour during the reception when they weren’t doing anything at all. I could go on and on… There are a lot of very good photographers out there. Hoffland is not worth the hassle.
Pros: Good photos
Cons: Difficult to work with; final product is poor quality
