I've only been to VCA Highlands twice, but came away pleased both times. The first time I went was for my freebie visit from the SPCA after adopting a dog a couple of years ago. We saw Dr. Faust and he was pleasant, calm, and seemed to really care about our new family member. No one tried to sell me anything, even flea/tick or heartworm meds which would be typical of any vet's office. This morning I had a minor emergency with a different dog and my regular vet was just going into surgery. I remembered my good first experience and figured what the heck? Might as well call and see if they can squeeze us in. We just happened to get Dr. Faust again on an emergency basis, but the entire staff was pleasant and caring. Dr. Faust explained our options and the reasoning for or against each one. After making a bloody mess of their exam room (sorry!) we decided on a course of action, or in this case inaction, together and all I was charged was a very reasonable exam fee. I love my current vet, but I won't hesitate to use VCA Highlands in the future.
The only reason I give 4 instead of 5 stars is that I really haven't tested their actual ability as veterinarians (diagnosis, surgery, etc) and I hope to never need to. Based on what I've seen, though, I would guess they'd do fine with any situation presented them.
