Absolutely love some doctors, hate others 8/14/2009

I started going to Ashley Women's Center when I was pregnant with my third pregnancy. I had previously had two miscarriages and was determined to not have a miscarriage with this my third pregnancy. I had been told by previous doctors that the miscarriages were just ""flukes"" and there was nothing they could do to give me a better chance of carrying a baby to full term. So, I was extremely happy and impressed when upon seeing Dr. Holman he was extremely understanding and said that we had several options, but he thought, from my history, that the problem might be hormonal, and he promptly placed me on progesterone. I then had an uneventful pregnancy up until 31 weeks. I had only seen Dr. Holman up to point because I like him so much, but as I approached the end of my pregnancy, I figured I had better meet the rest of the staff. So I made my biggest mistake and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Howe. The first appointment with him went okay but was very rushed. A few days later, I noticed that I was beginning to lose my mucous plug and soon after started experiencing very intense back pain, such that I had not experienced up to that point. I called the office because I was afraid it was back labor or something. The nurses reassured me that it was probably just a UTI and to come in for a urine test and a quick check by a doctor. Of course, Dr. Howe was the only one with appointment space available. I had no UTI and Dr. Howe just made me feel like an idiot for coming. He checked my cervix and said it was completely closed and told me that back pain was just a part of pregnancy and that I had better get used to it. I explained that this was much more intense and didn't really feel like muscular pain. He basically just blew me off. That night the back pain completely went away and I had no other issues with back pain at all until my water broke four days later and I experienced the same exact intense back pain. I am convinced that I was showing signs of preterm labor when I saw Dr. Howe. After being put on mag to hold off my labor, you can imagine my dissappoint when in walks Dr. Howe the next day to check my progress. First of all, he acted like he was meeting me for the very first time and then he proceeded to tell me that I was going to definitely have this baby the next day and that they were going to induce me if they needed to. This went completely against what I had previously been told, and at this point I was completely confused. Plus, Dr. Howe's bedside manner was awful. When Dr. Howe left, the nurse, who had been in the room the whole time, told me that she didn't recall hearing that plan and that she would contact Dr. Holman to find out for sure what the plan was. We found out that what Dr. Howe had told us was completely off, and Dr. Lynch came in to apologize for the confusion and took the time to completely explain the plan and reasons behind it.\r \r Needless to say, I will not schedule another appointment with Dr. Howe and will really hope that he is not on call when I go into labor. The rest of the staff, however, is worth the possibility that I will have to see Dr. Howe again, that is how great and understanding and kind they are. When my son was about a month old, I was having extreme pain when breastfeeding and saw Dr. Peach to see if I had mastitis. Everything that Dr. Howe lacks in bedside manner, Dr. Peach makes up for and a hundredfold. After determining that I did not have mastitis, even though at that point he wasn't sure what was causing my problem, he sat with me for 1 1/2 hours, no lie, in his office trying to figure it out. Upon leaving, he said he was so sorry for the pain I was experiencing and he gave me a hug. I really needed that right then because I was so frustrated. Dr. Peach and Dr. Holman are the BEST doctors I have ever had. \r Pros: Love the staff; Dr. Holman and Dr. Peach especially Cons: Dr. Howe more
