Ate here last Friday night. Restaurant wasn't too busy. Live music was nice. Our party of four ordered 2 appetizers, fried green tomatoes and fried okra. Tomatoes were excellent. fresh, juicy tomatoes in light, crispy breading. Okra was okay... used the same coating as the catfish, which I didn't dig. Other items were a big disappointment. Fried chicken was very dry. Candied yams were also dry, and the cheese in the mac and cheese had separated, making the dish very oily. Catfish was okay, but nothing spectacular. The service was horrendous. Our waitress basically refused to so much as cr- ack a smile the entire time we were there. We asked for recommendations as to entrees to order. Her response? ""You want chicken, order chicken. You want fish, order fish."" One person asked how the green beans were prepared, only to be given a rude stare and a ""withOUT meat."" Other servers seemed to be similar attitude. The sitdown restaurants Downtown and in Lees Summit are beautifully decorated, but I personally find eating soul food, traditionally African American food, in uppity restaurants where largely African American servers provide $20+ a plate food to a largely white clientele to be somewhat off-putting. You want real deal at great prices? Try out the Peachtree's buffet on Eastwood Trafficway. $12.99 will get you all-you-can-eat Peachtree goodness. The decor isn't so hot, but the food is amazing, the service nothing but friendly, and the price right. Pros: Appetizers were okay Cons: Service and main dishes, not so much. more
