Do not hire this builder 6/3/2009

I worked with this builder on a 6 month house remodel project. I didn't notice at first, but this builder did not check his sub contractors' work. The rough construction person was excellent. The furnace person was good. The rest were poor to abhorable. When mistakes were made I either got an excuse why it was my fault or I was told I didn't know what I was talking about. If it was easy to fix, he would. If it wasn't easy to fix, he wouldn't. For example, the tile backsplash installation in the kitchen wasn't on a level line over the stove where there was no countertop. It was level where the countertop was. Why? I think the installer didn't chalk a line between countertops and strayed from level. The builder tried to fix it by replacing a few tiles here and there but it's still off. His excuse? Our tile wasn't straight. (my fault). Another example. The electrician installed the under-cabinet lights and the screws went through into the bottom of the cabinets. Not just the first screw. ALL of the screws. The electrician didn't even bother to notice and check his work. His excuse? He wasn't used to the cabinets that I chose. (my fault). Third example. A painter was hired to remove wallpaper then paint 2 coats. After the job, I'm seeing chunks of wallpaper everywhere. The trim was rolled with wall paint. They painted over gunk and construction dust so brand new drywall, base, and shoe molding are gunky looking. His reply? I'm making a big deal about nothing. My left over paint has bubbles in it probably because he didn't wash the walls properly after removing the wallpaper and I have cleaner in it. I tried using the paint to touch up the 100 of spots they missed and it's bubbling. I'm going to have to throw it out and get new paint. This is $50/gallon paint...not cheap stuff that normally has bubbles. A fourth example...the drawing called for a three way switch for kitchen lighting. Two switches were installed but only one was wired. When I asked how come the second switch didn't work, I was told they only wired one and I'd be the only one who would know about it. No apology. No offer to fix. I could provide 25 other examples but I think you get the picture. Communication was ok to bad. Pros: Good general ideas Cons: Hard to work with. Not customer focused. Bad work. more
