Manical Management 5/1/2009

Returns? Not at Hancock fabrics. I purchased a bolt of decorator fabric on the promise of the salesperson that it was returnable. When I attempted to return it the next day with receipt, I was refused. I politely asked to speak to the manager, and a cute little blond thing flounced out. She quoted store policy against the return of the bolt because I had removed 1/2 yard to make a practice pillow. Apparently, cutting the fabric voided the return promise, despite that the remaining 10 yards had never been unrolled. Sadly, my original sales clerk omitted this critical detail of the policy. ""Do I have any recourse?"" I squeaked. ""No."" was her firm reply. ""But your salesperson promised. Even if in error, your company should honor his words."" At this, the blond spat, ""It is store policy!"" and turned to go. Yikes! I am a mild mannered old lady, and this was a little aggressive for the occasion. I quietly reminded her that poor customer service may land her on Yelp. She swelled up before my eyes, fists clenched and shaking. ""IT...IS...STORE...POLICY !!!!"" she shrieked, stamping her foot and flapping her arms to emphasize each word. Oh dear. Perhaps she was having a bad day. She visibly controlled herself and added, ""You are NOT a nice person."" This she repeated twice. Here I must give her credit for at least partly controlling her rampant emotions, as she was clearly bursting with the effort of retraining herself from saying something MUCH stronger. She won. I was so startled by her hot-headed tantrum that I meekly slunk away, leaving both my money and the fabric on the table. What on earth did I say that provoked such a response? Did I raise my voice? Become combative? Appear to be a wild-eyed nut case? Threaten the end of civilization as we know it? No, no, no, and no, at least not yet. But I here get the last word. Let this posting stand as a reminder that in the end, the pen is mightier than the policy. Thanks SJ Metro. Pros: Mall parking Cons: Service more
