I have a pathological love for gyros, so I after many months of driving by Royal Gyros thinking, "someday I'll stop by and pick one up when I'm hungry", I finally did today. The owners were friendly and attend to me personally, and the menu includes more than the usual Middle Eastern fare - there are also imported Chicago hot dogs and other American-style staples.
I had actually bought a Gyro from Pita Jungle earlier in the week and was curious as to how they would compare. In truth, the reason I most enjoyed Royal Gyros is that not only was the gyro meat tender and well-seasoned, but more importantly, the sandwich was STUFFED with meat way past the pita. Pita Jungle was good too, but Royal used - no joke - at least twice, if not 3 times, the meat my Pita Jungle sandwich had, and it was juicier.
I actually came home, stored half the gyro meat in the fridge, ate my heartily stuffed gyro, then had an equally packed homemade gyro sanwich for dinner - now that's value! Pricewise, they're both about the same, at around 5 dollars and change for a gyro. The main difference is that Pita Jungle throws in lettuce and a pickle as well, while Royal keeps it more on the traditional side with onion, tomato, and the sauce - but I honestly prefer my meat to be tastier and far more abundant like at Royal. Screw the pickle.
I'll be returning for sure...
Pros: Great tasting food; friendly service; and most important - great value with lots of gyro meat!
Cons: Mmmm...none, really. Place was ok.
