Some concerns 7/31/2008

I have seen one of the psychiatrists and spoken with one on the phone. Was not impressed with either of these. The office manager would not allow me to switch to another psychiatrist at their center and would not give my message to the psychiatrist I wished to transfer to. I wanted a psychiatrist who was more interested in me getting well than taking medicine. I became addicted to Ativan, a medicine the original psychiatrist prescribed me. He did not tell me it caused dependency. Once I realized I had become dependent, he wouldn't take me off, saying I needed to take these meds for my condition (anxiety and panic). I told him the meds made it worse, because I got panicky and nervous every day as the effects wore off. he told me that was my disorder. So, I weaned myself off them. It was very difficult for about three weeks, almost hell, but I was so much better after I came off them. And then I pursued cognitive treatment of my anxiety through a psychologist and then a therapist. I am amazed how helpful that was, and so thankful I stood up to the psychiatrist. Please, be careful. Psychiatrists should respect their patients' wishes in terms of medication. I would have been a basket case now and on many types of meds if I did not have the courage to have done what I did. more
