Youthful Inexperience 5/30/2008

While the new and younger owner of Fountaine's is very enthusiastic and warm, she is not a seamstress or gown designer. Sound silly? I know-let me explain. I tried on a sample gown that was too small, but I loved the look of the gown. After weeks of trying on dresses I decided this was the dress for me. Lindsey assured me that the dress was ""much easier to take in than out"" and so we should order a larger dress. Sounds logical-right? Corset dresses are almost impossible to take in. When did I find this out? When I met with the store's seamstress, who was perplexed as to why we ordered a larger size instead of the right size and then let it out a bit. My dress arrived and was not finished with the alterations until the day before the wedding. At that point it still didn't fit. I looked at least 20 pounds heavier than I actually am and because of the extent of the alterations the dress visibly gaped across my chest where it was still much too big. The alterations were in excess of $200. Sadly my wedding pictures make me look frumpy and dumpy with an ill-fitting dress that I did not have the budget or the time to replace with such short notice. Fountaine's refunded the cost of alterations and gave me a healthy discount on my veil and gifted my hair accessory. I am married to an amazing man and after I changed out of the massive mess and into a sundress for the reception, we had a great time. MORAL? Please, please go to a store where they have a seamstress or older bridal consultant on hand who definitely knows what they are talking about OR find a dress that fits when you try it on. Good luck! Pros: It is a small shop, so that the selection does not overwhelm you Cons: The owner is young and inexperienced in dress fitting and suggestions. more
