I took my Cocker Spaniel to Broadway Pet Hospital for a bad case of kennel cough. The hospital did an x-ray, blood tests, flushed his ears and gave him medicine for his cough. The cost was $517. They then diagnosed a mass in his abdomen (which was found by chance on the x-ray). The vet, Dr. Thurm, did not even seem to know where the mass was located. In addition, she informed us that our dog's heart was okay. A week later the radiologist finally confirmed it was a splenic mass and also diagnosed heart disease (an enlarged heart), with a valve problem. The hosp. recommended immediate surgery for $2000-$2500 -- and said that an ultrasound might be useful, but they recommended just going forward with the surgery. We took our dog for a second opinion at Claremont Hosp. (a great vet on College Avenue). The vet (Dr. Frizzell) was immediately able to tell it was a splenic mass and that our dog had heart disease (from the same x-ray). He said the surgery would cost $700-$800 (not $2000-2500 as more
