I have spent many hundreds of dollars at MIF over the years, and the only reason I go there is they are fast, in the neighborhood, and open till 9 p.m. They're busy because they're the only game in town if you don't want to get measured at a cramped dry cleaners. The store is big, well lit, has floorlength mirrors, a tacky 1980s color scheme, and they pipe in fashion show videos. You are going to pay for that cheesy 80s decor with the high prices of the alterations and the bad attitude! You half expect Duran Duran to pop around the corner singing "Please Please Tell Me Now," which is what you will want to say every time they make a mistake, which is often.
What bothers me about this place is that in spite of their high prices they a very unreasonable and never admit to making a mistake. Here's an example: I took a pair of brand new white Versace jeans in there that I paid $200 for (on sale) at Saks, to get hemmed. When I went to pick them up, both legs of the pants had bright red stains from top to bottom--someone obviously had spilled an entire Gatorade on them. What was astonishing was that the staff tried to argue that this was how the pants were when I brought them in! Can you imagine? Outrageous! The pants were perfectly clean when I tried them on for measurement in there, and MIF refused to pay for them. Luckily they got them dry cleaned and the stains came out, but they still charged me for the alteration, which was delayed two weeks due to the cleaning. Another time they put a simple hem on some blue jeans and instead of their normal $8 charge or whatever it is, they charged me $20, claiming it was a custom hem because the color was bright yellow instead of dull yellow!! They also damaged a leather item a friend brought in, and they denied that. I finally decided to go elsewhere. This place is unreliable with quality, the prices are too high, the customer service is really poor, and they are greedy.
Pros: large space, well lit, fast turnaround, mostly good work, open late
Cons: very high prices, will not admit mistakes, charge for redoing their mistakes, appear to be greedy
