La Laiterie (the restaurant portion of Farmstead) is simply the best place to eat in Providence. They use local ingredients, lots of interesting and fresh produce, and of course an amazing selection of cheeses and charcuterie. The menu changes often, so no one gets bored. The entrees are exquisite--the burger is tender, moist and flavorful, and comes with delicious polenta fries; fish and poultry are always well prepared in thoughtful and creative combinations. But the best thing here are the smaller plates, which are innovative and unafraid of strong-tasting ingredients (livers, cod, sardines, etc.) Desserts never disappoint, except for the fact that old favorites aren't always on the menu--the sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce, for example (please bring it back!). Wines by the glass are interesting and very good. Plus a selection of tasty, full-bodied beers.
Pros: Amazingly well-prepared, creative, high-quality food
Cons: Small, no reservations, always a waiting line, no place to wait while in line
