I am not sure if they are expensive. I had extensive work done on one computer that included mixing parts from another to make it all work. Yeah I guess I could have paid someone at a big box less for some of the parts. Personally I like supporting the small business guy. The work was done quickly and to my total satisfaction. For $300 I had all my files transferred, the whole system run through, all the old junk cleared out totally from the memory, new memory added, a couple drives swapped between two computers and this also included the original testing on both to figure out the best solution to the problem plus a few other minor details. Very reasonable if you ask me.
