MISLEADING & BAIT & SWITCH TACTICS 9/3/2007

On Memorial Day, my girl took her father's car here for a $40 oil change and car wash. To her shock, the final bill was over $100. They claimed she had authorized a motor flush, which she had not. They had showed her a very dirty air filter, claimed it was from the truck and, without telling her the price, suggested she get a new one. She agreed to the air filter, but was told minutes later they did not have one in stock and they'd started a motor flush instead. I spoke with car wash manager Joseph MACATANGAY who said they always tell the customers the cost and show the prices on their computer screen and would not begin any work unless the customer agreed to it. When I told Joseph she had not been told of revised costs until she received the bill, Joseph said his employees would never lie and said told me my girl was lying. I don't doubt there are those in Oakland who fail to pay for services, but my girl is a responsible person who willingly pays for services she authorizes. The issue here is that they did work without her informed consent. I asked Joseph why a written estimate for customers to review and sign before commencing any work was not provided. He did not have a response. This whole experience was full of questionable business practices which I will be reporting to the appropriate governing bodies. Cons: crisis/pressure tactics to do additional work, fail to provide price information before conducting additonal work, more
