Community Caring 7/25/2007

Last month my wife and I were visiting relatives in Port Angeles, and during our vacation we had the opportunity to tour the foodbank there. Being from Hawai'i where the unemployment rate is the lowest in the nation, it was humbling seeing the operation that has been set up to assist the needy in your community. Mikki Saunders, the director of the foodbank showed us around and threw staggering numbers at us; how many people were helped on a daily basis, food drives, donations etc. I found it very heart warming and so wonderful that there are still communities and individuals who care about their people in need. As I toured the building, the thing that stood out to me the most was the countless thank you cards and letters from the keiki (children) in the community. Thanking the foodbamk director (Mikki) for helping them with everything from lunch items to school accessories. I must admit, my eyes became a little teary seeing these simple but heartfelt words from youngsters who would have done without if not for the support of Mikki and her staff. My wife and I left there feeling that we had left our paradise in Hawai'i to vacation in another paradise in Port Angeles. A paradise is not one of sandy beaches or swaying palm trees; a paradise is a place where love and compassion for others overcomes all boundaries and circumstances. Thank you Port Angeles Washington, thank you Mikki of the Port Angeles Food Bank - you made our experience in your quaint town a memorable one that will never be forgotten.
