I called ahead of time when my 16+ year old cat needed to be put to sleep because he could no longer control his kidneys. I was crying and took me to another room. They couldn't find any record of my being there before and that took up some time but when they brought in a vet and an assistant to talk to me I felt pressured by the vet to run more tests and I knew I could not afford this but didn't want to say it. They then gave up with that after leaving me alone with my kitty. My poor cat endured way too much time there. He became frightened as I was crying so hard. I thought I couldn't take anymore.
