When I was a kid I always wanted to play the guitar. Instead I ended up taking violin lessons. Finally I decided to fulfill my long put off dream of learning to play the guitar.
I'd tired a few times before from magazines and the internet but I never got the hang of how to read those charts and things. A friend of mine who plays guitar pretty darn well tried to give me a few lessons but since he was self taught he really wasn't able to help me when I had questions on what things were, why and how they worked.
So, I thumbed through the yellow pages and found this studio listed, checked out their web site which had a whole bunch of helpful information (like what to look for in a teacher...). When I called the studio the person I spoke with was very encouraging and informative about what GTR offers and the quality of their teachers (musically trained and also play professionally too). I decided to sign up for a month to see how I liked it and have been going for since January!
I have learned SO MUCH -- more than I ever thought possible in such a short time. My teacher is great at explaining and demonstrating everything in a fun and motivating way. I'm to the point where I can bring in a song from my favorite CD and after listening to it just a little bit my teacher can help me figure out what key the song is in and what scales and chords I should be using to play it! Cool.
One thing I've always struggled with was timing (rhythm) but my teacher has given me some great images to show me why it's important to learn to do this well, and _how_ to play rhythm well.
Bottom line, if you live in this area, I would highly reccomend lessons at GTR Music Studio. They have top notch instructors, it's a great place to come for lessons (kinda homey, but proferssional enough without being too "stuffy") and they have all the gear you'd expect from a full service lesson studio.
Pros: Great quality teaching, comfy space (waiting and warm-up room ... worth EVERY dollar!
Cons: Wish I had more time to play my guitar!
