I checked this place out Sat night after a grad school function. It's a great space and the club design is thoughtful and well-laid out. The toilets are unusual and not for the shy or self-conscious. The club overall had a good vibe and a good-looking crowd. The guys at the door were selective enough to make sure the crowd quality remained good but not to the point of being arrogant (though we got free passes which probably helped). The music was a bit ordinary though - it was all over the place, from top 40 stuff to hiphop to industrial house but the DJ didn't seem to know how to build rhythm and continuity - he was jumping from genre to genre which was annoying. Generally a loungey type club like Mantra, where people are hanging out but not really dancing hardcore (as there's not much of a dance floor) should be playing a lot more funky or handbag house (which is sadly lacking in Boston). Plus he didn't really mix the songs in and out - the song would abruptly end and a new one would start. Come on mate, if you're that bad at mixing tracks play a compilation dance CD or something. The quality of the DJ brings my rating down from an 8 to a 7. This place has a lot of potential if it gets a decent DJ to spin its vinyl as the other elements are in place.
