I recently took my girlfriend here, at her request, for her birthday. Being a culinary grad, former resident of Chicago (no stranger to steaks), and self-proclaimed foodie, I was dissapointed in our evening...to say the least. The ambiance was nice, but the tables are so small they barely leave you room to set your wine glass down after the food is delivered. Not to mention the fact that they are all right on top each other. I must say the flavor of the steak was delicious, but was cooked just past the med-rare that I ordered, and it came out a bit on the cold side. I expected the king crab topping to be chunks that covered the steak, but it was only one single piece that was barely as big as my little finger. The sauces were too thick and should be served on the side (perhaps part of the reason the temperature was off). The service was average, at best. When I dine at a place of this supposed caliber, I shouldn't need to ask for another glass of wine before my server offers one (after it was completely empty). The clearing of the table was also not accomplished in a timely manner. The floor manager was cheesy and didn't seem the least bit sincere when checking on us. But the worst part of all was that they forgot my girlfriend's bday. I made mention of the fact that that was the reason for our visit when I made the reservation, and again the morning of our dinner when they called to confirm. Which was another turn-off. When I asked the girl what they do for bdays, she explained that there would be a chocolate dessert w/some ""goop"" on top. When asked if they could personalize the dessert with a happy b'day and my girlfriend's name written with the sauce (which is a very easy request to accomodate, and has been done for me elsewhere before), she flat-out denied my request without checking into it further. Don't be fooled by their reputation. I will be dining at Morton's next time. The price and wine is comparable and you have no less than 3 servers plus backwaiters. Pros: just the name Cons: service more
