The ER is a complete hellhole 11/5/2007

I really pity anyone who has to go to the ER at this hospital (NY Hospital of Queens, formerly Booth Memorial). My 80 year old grandmother was brought there because the EMTs refused to take her to NY Presbeterian in Manhattan, where she had recently had surgery and where her regular doctor was. She had kidney removal surgery to remove a cancerous tumor less than a week before and was extremely dehydrated and constantly throwingup. She remained in the ER for TWENTY THREE HOURS before being placed in a ""holding room"". The ER was disgusting, FILTHY and noisy and the nurses couldn't care if you live or die. They allow patients to throwup on themselves rather than get them a basin. God help you if you don't have someone there with you to advocate for you. The ER is filled with pitiful souls crying and moaning in pain and they are COMPLETELY IGNORED. My disabled mother was screamed at by a security guard when she dared to lean on the edge of my grandmother's bed (she had been in the ER with her for 15 hours at this point and there are NO CHAIRS). I was kicked out by an equally nasty little rent-a-cop because they will only allow one person with the patient (despite the fact that almost no one had anyone with them besides my grandmother, they just couldn't have anyone else there). The woman at the front information desk can barely speak English. Avoid this hellhole if you can. Cons: Nurses who ignore patients in pain, filthy conditions, 24 hour ER waits, staff who barely speaks English more
