Chinese comfort food 10/31/2007

I'm not a foodie, but I think about sitting down at Fong's Dang How several times a month. This restaurant is my hands down favorite of any cusine, in any city. The food is seasoned well, the service is excellent, and the menu features Chinese standards. It is true that the menu has gone unchanged for some time; but that stability is crucial to folks who become annoyed with discontinued menu items, seasonal items, and changes in pricing. When I come home to Hayward, I know the egg foo yung will taste exactly as good as it did the last time. I live in Houston, on a budget, and most of the Chinese food experiences available to me are sloppy, tepid buffets that feature largely Vietnamese selections. Dang How is a welcome refuge from the tons of greasy chicken thighs converted into 'general tso's' and other run of the mill, tasteless dishes. This restaurant features a variety of pleasant teas. I recommend the won-ton soup, any fried rice, tempura shrimp, and my favorite- the pork egg foo yung. The food at Fong's Dang How is so good I make my poor mother get food from the restaurant, freeze it, and carry it with her on the plane whenever she goes home without me. The customer service is excellent: I have never had to track down a server; the food comes to the table quickly and accurately. The atmosphere is warm at Dang How. Overall, I believe this restaurant is an affordable and delicious mainstay in the Castro Valley/Hayward area that could compete with the rest of the Bay. Try it, you might like it too. Pros: Service, Taste Cons: There's only one location! more
