A Piece of History 6/22/2006

Knott's Fried Chicken has long been considered one of the best fried chicken houses in Southern California, if not the world. Many skeptics have refuted this claim, and some even accuse the chicken itself of being bland; which leads me to ask them in return, where else would you go? Where else would you find an excellent four piece dinner including chicken noodle soup, a biscuit, and dessert? Aside from the extras, where else would you find a breastpiece so tender and moist that it seems to put all other fried chicken places to shame? The only fried chicken I've had better than this was my mother's, which, of course, I cannot review. Obviously with the advent of the Chicken Broaster, the taste, freshness, and texture of fried (""broasted"") chicken in general has improved, but Knotts stays true to the old method and continues to turn out wonderfully juicy and tender chicken for a fair price. The lines do get long; but if it wasn't worth it, all the other people would not have waited. It's better to stand in the line than to stand to the side, stare at the line, and complain. Whittle away the time talking (this is an experience to share with others), and next thing you know you're at the table waiting for your food. Try to avoid peak lunch and dinner times-- try to stop by around 5 for dinner to avoid lines that are TOO long. Pros: Genuinely feel-good fried chicken. Cons: Lines can get pretty long; bring something to do or someone to talk with. more
