Just not the same . . . 6/7/2006

I grew up with Tony's Coneys right down the street. They were a vintage coney stand with great sundaes and shakes. They had a small counter and just a few tattered stools out front, and you had to fight off flies while eating your ice cream cone. There were old-fashioned signs propped up inside the glass window and the menu always had letters that had fallen off. It was perfectly 1980s, unpretentious, and cheap. Unfortunately, they knocked down the old-fashioned Tony's Coneys sign and (like many other local favorites) turned it into a chain restaurant. Now, Tony's is in a trailor-like building a few blocks away, and it no longer has the nostalgic appeal. Their food might be the same, but it just isn't the same as it was when they operated out of a tiny building, covered by a canapy, with a few wobbly stools out front. Tony's was a far west-side staple, and although it still exists it simply isn't the same. more
