Good but could be better Brazilian 12/21/2006

Tried out this place with some friends with mixed results. I wanted to get something different so ordered the boneless pork short ribs braised for hours with ""fried"" polenta and some powder. the rib meat was succulent and tender, reminiscent of osso bucco and korean galbijjim (braised short ribs in a soy/garlic/sugar sauce). the polenta wasn't exactly fried. it was an unseasoned blob hidden under all that juicy rib meat. We had empanadas as appetizers that I thought were sub-par. The beef one had chunks of tough beef with no flavor and the cheese one exploded with an overdose of cheese upon cutting it open -- way too cheesy and heavy. I wished they offered brazilian cocktails but they only had wine and beer as alcohol. wine selection was decent and the argentine malbec I had was pretty good. The sides were good. We had plaintains and fried yuca, and both were solid. My only complaint is that the yuca portion could be more generous. There must have been like 6 pieces of fried yuca on our plate. My friends had the fish in a heavy cream sauce that looked suspect and the other two had the standard beef and chicken tropicalia. the beef seemed to be more popular than the chicken. atmosphere was not that great but I suppose people would go to the adjacent bar for that. service was spotty. One of my biggest pet peeves is when we get the check before we even ask for it. that's outright rude, unless it's closing time and the wait staff needs to go home, which wasn't the case this time. I may return if i'm in the area, but not go out of my way. Pros: good pork ribs, plaintains, yuca, wine list Cons: spotty service, soso ambience, bad empanadas and small sides' portions more
