Interesting 10/8/2006

I live in Downey. I picked up my sister Linda and her son Shane from the airport Friday night Oct 6. I thought fighting traffic back to Downey on Friday night was useless so made reservations at Gladstones for 7:30. We arrived, parked and had checked in by 7:15 and they had us seated by 7:20 so that part was great! John introduced himself as our waiter and had a very dry sense of humor that we all enjoyed. He let us know what the specials were, took our drink orders and each of us ordered a bowl of clam chowder (which is an extra.) I thought I could probably get soup or salad with dinner but that is not the case. Even just a green salad is an extra $4.95. Anyway, after a few minutes John returned with our drinks (sodas) but no soup. And he was off again. John did return and refilled my soda but still no soup. After a while he came back and said somehow they kitchen had run out of clam chowder and were cooking more. (out of clam chowder on a Friday night??!! And it wasn't very busy at that point either.) After a while here comes John again to let us know good news and bad news. The chowder is almost ready to be served but bad news is our dinner is going to be right behind it. Not very organized for such a place of business. I didn't even get but about 2 spoonfuls of the chowder before dinner was served. I got the steak & lobster $45.95. No steak sause, no fresh drawn butter but the lobster & the steak were both tasty but.....John made up the difference by giving us a couple pieces of chocolate cake for free as compensation. Bottom line...it was OK but I wouldn't hurry back. I don't go out for dinner very often & spend $150 for 3 people so I expected more...maybe that is my problem. The left overs are great tho. The animals they make out of aluminum foil to take home!! Pros: Quick seating Cons: value to price more
