I've been eating sushi for over 25 years and have known Ray-san since he was at the old (vs. new) Shige. Ever since we discovered Akebono, it is our restaurant of choice! Everything there is top-notch and ""chef's choice"" is definitely the way to go. For the purists, the nigiri is amply portioned and has amazing flavor. Definitely a two-bite endeavor! For the more ""westernized"" palate, the specialty rolls, like the ""deep-fried California roll"" and the namesake ""Akebono roll"", are a sensory delight!
It is quite open and airy. The decor is bright, sleek, and and very Japanese. They even have a genuine bonsai tree at the sushi bar!
It can get very busy on the weekends (go early), but there is plenty of sushi bar space (and conventional table space) and there is usually at least two chefs (Ray-san plus others) on duty. Visit often and be adventurous!
