I grew up in Metairie and while my parents still lived there we always had to visit Barreca's at least once every trip. David Barreca serves as fine a plate of authentic local cruisine as any of the ""big name"" restaurants.
His ""eggplant and shrimp"" were tops on my list as well as his ""seafood"" pasta.
If you only have one place to go -- go there!
