Our unborn baby was diagnosed with Esophageal Atresia, which meant his esophagus ended in a pouch and was not connected to his stomach. While pregnant I found a website explaining a method used by Dr. Foker in MN that stretched the esophagus ends together over a period of two weeks in the event of long gaps (5-7 cm, most gaps are 2-3 cm and can be repaired at birth) so that a repair could be made ASAP. He read the article and was willing to try this method if our baby had a long gap, which he did. His esophagus was repaired at 2 1/2 weeks. I was pleasantly surprised Dr. Voigt was open to a new method and attempt something he'd never done before. He was experienced with babies born with this condition. It's a busy practice with 5 surgeons, with very personal care.
