The food at Julien was very good but not great- and at those prices, I expect it to be terrific. There was nothing truly original on the menu- it's a good place for the older, less adventurous diner.
The portions are small, which I generally don't have a problem with, but when one of the men in our group ordered the apple trio and got a minute slice of apple tart, a dollop of cinnamon apple ice cream, and a shaving of apple skin over a piece of chocolate, it was clear presentation was favored over food experience. And, in fact, that sums up Julien as a whole.
If you want to drop a lot of cash and be appreciated for it, the atmosphere of Julien certainly caters- the service is excellent and the decor is quite lavish. If you want food to match the setting, though, go to L'Espalier.
