For fresh donuts try this Winchell's in the morning on Greenleaf in Whittier. The line can be busy depending on when you show up but worth the wait. Usually open late, this is a nice place to stop, eat and chat with friends if you're strolling through Uptown after dark. Beware of the bums though which loiter around the place early morning or late during the night.
