Good Hall, Should be better 8/15/2002

Avery Fisher Hall, home to the New York Philharmonic, is a good concert hall which should have been better. Originally opened in 1962 as Philharmonic Hall, it has been refurbished over the years. The current configuration produced the best acoustics yet, but without much bass sound and with a too-bright effect. Also, the latest reincarnation does not have the pipe organ that Philharmonic Hall was given in 1963...a tremendous mistake on the part of the acoustic engineers and designers. Still, this hall manages to provide barely adequate facilities for most concertgoers. Lincoln Center has promised to renovate the hall in the near future and we can only hope to see the aforementioned short comings rectified. Pros: very comfortable, fully accessible, great location Cons: no pipe organ, tricky acoustics, bland interior more
