"Fun" Attic? 6/14/2012

I used to go to this place all the time as a kid. At the time, it was fun, and there was an adventure at every turn. Whether it was eating a raspberry slushy at the concession stand (conveniently located in the middle of "The Fun Attic"), or discovering the part that gave it its name (the Attic of course!) we always had fun there. And then the hurricanes (Charley, Francis, and Jeanne) hit. The last time I visited the place was in 2005. The roof was caved in above the concession stand, and the attic had severe water damage. Yet, somehow they were still open. This was the time in my life that I began to notice things, such as hygiene. When I was younger, I didn't mind that other children (that could have been sick or not potty trained) had been touching (or licking... eeew!) everything that the other children (including me) played on. It was during my birthday party in 2005 that I noticed this. It smelled terrible in that place. I don't know if it was mold from the water damage or something else. Whatever it was, it was terrible. The other part that REALLY turned me off was when a kid um... threw up... in one of the swirly slides during my birthday party. GROSS! Overall, that experience was the worst. I don't know if it was just because of my sudden enlightenment about hygiene, or if it was just me growing up, but I no longer found the place to be... fun. For me, the "Fun" in the Fun Attic was all but lost. Apparently others (including the owners) thought so too. It's such a shame that it closed, but I think it was only a matter of time. Even without the hurricanes, I'm sure the health department, as well as building surveyors would deem the place as condemned and/ or a threat to public health (whether it be dangerous or just flat out unclean.) I do miss this place, but I believe that its closure was inevitable. more
