We've had two 10 x 20s since Decemeber of 2010. iStorage bought this business last May or June so we were two and a half months in and never had a problem with the previous owners. We absolutely loved them.
It did not start off well with the new owners.
Our daughter had a unit for a short period of time. We were closing it out since she was moving into her own apartment. The day of her moving out, she told them we were getting things out the following day. My husband also left his ladder there. She told them when we were getting the stuff and did the paperwork for it and the day of, we came back with the truck and they had locked up the door and no one was in the office. It took us a whole 24 hours to close our her unit and get her stuff out.
I never paid more than I needed to with the former owners. It was the same every month. The first month with iStorage, they charged me *three times more* than the original charge and it took them 5 weeks to take off the additional charges. From that point on, I never paid the same amount every month. They added a fee here and there to the point where I finally took my card off file. Even though it was more inconvenient to write a check every month, it was better. If I was a day late, they would charge me an extra fee and then call me *four times a day* and lock me out.
One time we found a bunch of mice and ants in our unit and another time, they painted the units and got paint in the unit. Thankfully, it didn't get on any of our stuff. We finally said enough is enough and moved one of our units out to another family-owned business that had a waiting list because everyone in the neighborhood was moving over to that one.
I called their district manager and told them that they were absolutely horrible and he said he would call me back after he talked with them. Never heard back. I then get a call from Vanessa from iStorage and she tells me that my rate has increased and if I didn't pay it, they would keep our stuff. I told her we have antique furniture in there and she told me "You don't have a choice." On Yelp, there's all these great reviews that were all made recently and I believe they were put there by the people at iStorage because I contacted one of the numbers and I reached Vanessa!
Like I said, the previous owners could not have been nicer. This is a small town and we talked with other people with similar problems. A neighbor asked where they could store their stuff and asked us where we were and we told them to NOT use iStorage. They do not care about their customers.
