Best choice for authentic japanese meal in Triangle area. more

Feels like home 8/20/2010

This is the most authentic Japanese restaurant in town. You can get many dishes that are not available in other restaurants like takoyaki, hijiki, gomaae, etc. The decor is very Japanese, and I love that they use unique handmade bowls and cups. The service is fantastic, and food tastes just like home. They have many healthy dishes on the menu. Authentic, cozy, friendly place with a unique menu. Highly recommended for people who know real Japanese food. more

Not worth the money 12/29/2007

We went to Yamazushi tonight after not having been there in years and were very disappointed. Some of the sushi was tough and dry and the yakatori was fatty and tough. The wine servings were small and expensive, even though they were half price the night we went. The biggest issue we had was that everything was so overpriced and really not worth it. On the positive side, the wait staff was friendly and we had no problem finding a table. Pros: friendly wait staff Cons: high prices, mediocre food more

Best sushi in Durham!!!! 12/4/2006

I took my woman to Yamazushi for dinner a few nights ago, and was completely impressed. I have traveled all over the US and many parts of the world, and this is without a doubt the best quality sushi I have ever had. The fish was amazingly fresh! There is a small, semi-private dining area where folks can actually sit on the floor and eat at an authentic Japanese table, for a touch of something exotic. The prices are among the best that I have ever seen as well. The two of us ate 30 pices of assorted sushi, meso soup, salad, and green tee for right at 30 dollars! I thought the check was wrong when it came out; it was so low. I would highly recomend the spicy tuna, Philly roll, and the fried Duke roll was realy quite good (and a safe bet for beginers). For those fo you not yet brave enough to eat ""raw"" fish, there is an impressive selection of vegetble sushi for you to choose from. I would highly recomend this place as a great alternative to the loud, packed, typical restaurants so common in the Triangle. Pros: Quality, service, value Cons: generic atmosphere more

great, relaxing japanese restaurant 11/30/2006

My husband and I had lunch at Yamazushi today and we simply enjoyed the food and the relaxed atmosphere (before going back to a stressful work schedule). The food was very fresh, the taste of all dishes even of the ""daily"" miso soup was sophisticated, and everything was lovely presented - the Green Tea was superb! We just savoured the food, could forget about everything out there and went back to work relaxed - c'est parfait! Highly recommended! more

Stay away....PERIOD!! 8/11/2006

I am by no means a food snob nor a sushi snob, but I know good sushi and in this case horrible sushi when I've had it. I've lived in SoCal and Seattle for the last 20yrs. so I can differentiate between the two. Horrible, horrible sushi and completely ruined my wife's bento. Everything was dry, not-fresh, and lacking flavor and taste. I've actually had better sushi from Trader Joe's or even Safeway. We should've gone with our gut feeling when the Mexican place next door was bustling with a saturday night dinner crowd as was the pub next door on the opposite side. We walk into this place and we've got our pick of tables as no one is even there at 7p. Go down the street to shiki sushi (sp?) on Hwy 54 as it's much, much better. Don't waste your time here.....CT Pros: hot towel at being seated Cons: everything else more

Best Sushi in the Woodcroft Area 2/10/2006

This place doesn't look like much from the outside, but we were pleased when we walked in. It's nice and clean and the decor is pleasing. Service was excellent. They have a very nice Sake cocktail menu. Very delicious. The prices overall are typical of decent Japanese food. The sushi was one definitely the best I've tried so far in the area-at least as far as the Spider roll and spicy tuna went (and was it spicy! but good!). My girlfriend had the Udon noodles which was very good. We will definitely come back! Pros: Good service, Good drinks, Good sushi more

Decent sushi close to RTP 1/23/2006

I work out in RTP and used to make the trip to Yamazushi at least once a week for lunch. They offer a wonderful lunch menu with several bento box lunches. The maki sushi is good, with the Hurricane Roll a must try. This Yama specialty has tuna, avacado, and salmon on the outside of a reverse roll, with salmon and shrimp tempura on the inside, and three sauces drizzled on top. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive, the atmosphere is simple, quiet, and relaxing (perfect for a lunch get-away). Unfortunately with the economy the way it is, and the prices for super fresh ingredients going up, I had to lower my rating to three stars. The fish just isn't as great as it used to be, and most likely due to the lower volume of clients coming in. The cooked food here is a treat though. :-) Pros: Good lunch sets, Good atmosphere, Friendly staff Cons: Fish quality lower than usual (not bad, just not great). more

Yamazushi is a hidden gem 9/27/2005

I just had dinner here for the first time, and was blown away by the food. I eat sushi frequently and have gotten used to traveling to Raleigh for it, but I won't be anymore. The waitstaff was extremely friendly, the wine and sushi rolls were excellent, and affordable. I can't believe I had never heard of this place before, but I'll be going back often. Pros: affordable, excellent sushi, friendly staff more

The Best Sushi in Durham 5/22/2003

I have been eating at Yamazushi for a few years now. I have eaten at most of the sushi restaurants on this list. Although I do not frequently dine-in (mostly take-out). I must say they have the best sushi & shrimp tempura in Durham! Try the Tarheel roll, it's delicious! more

Unnaceptable service 12/1/2002

We had eaten once at the Yamazushi and the food was quite good, so we decided to have dinner there on a Sunday night even though we had to drive for 40 minutes to get there. The Yamazushi is supposed to stay open until 9:30, which in the place I came from means you can enter the restaurant until 9:30 and still expect to be served. We got there at 9:00 and the cooks started to argue loudly that they wanted us to leave, because it was too late. As we left I remembered that when I first ate there, we were almost expelled from the restaurant at 10:00. Never more... Pros: Good food Cons: bad service, pricy more
