Special Place 3/15/2010

Because it's laid back, the El Camino Y is a comfortable place to workout. But you do need to be patient and chilled, because there are lots of people there only ostensibly working out, which the laid back atmosphere makes all-too easy to do. There are people grappling with health issues; there is a family orientation (which means, well, you know...); there are monstrously out of shape people who install themselves on cardio equipment really only to read books/magazines, do office work, and/or watch TV. Yup, welcome to the YMCA. This a place where the "normal" people are truly weird, and the mentally handicapped offer a sobering and sacred reality check (love them all). Esp since the opening of El Camino Hospital literally directly across the street, parking has been nothing less than a hassle--so ride your bike! All in all, the facility is really nice--towels towels everywhere--and I love the outdoor pool year round! Pros: Laid Back Cons: Laid Back more
