Fun, Educational & Photogenic 8/18/2010

I didn't expect much when my boyfriend and I visited the Wright Brothers National Memorial at the start of our cross-country road trip this summer (check out our trip blog, "A Mini & A Map"), but I was very pleasantly surprised by how wonderful the memorial is. It's more than a memorial -- there's a monument, but there are also museums, displays, a gift shop, picnic areas, and a really great sculpture. Don't assume that you'll breeze through this place in half an hour -- allow yourself enough time to check out the museums and special displays, walk along the monuments marking the distances of the first 4 flights, visit the large monument with a great view of the coast, and check out the sculpture of the first plane that's behind the monument. Definitely worth a visit, and an enjoyable stop for both kids and adults. more

  • The Scene
    Site of Wilbur and Orville Wright's first flight on Dec. 17, 1903, the park houses a small museum, a reproduction of the Wright's camp, ground markings where the first successful flights took off and landed, and a granite monument to the brothers set atop Kill Devil Hill.

    The Experience
    The modest museum contains various exhibits following the Wright brothers' journey from dreamers to history makers, including a replica of the wind tunnel they used to test the flier. In the space adjacent to the museum, rangers give hourly demonstrations on a life-sized replica of the original flier. Outside, patrons can peek in the brothers' hangar and living quarters, walk the path of the first flight, and hike to the monument on the top of Kill Devil Hill; the views alone are worth the climb.
