I just can't get enough of the delicious brisket sandwich, comfort food sides, and friendly atmosphere! I am only in town for the week until returning to Texas and hope to get my fill before going home. Wish I had a BBQ joint in Texas that knew had to feed a crowd. It is a small restaurant so get there early to get a good seat! Love the free cornbread and ribs are great too! Pros: Delicious smoked meats Cons: What cons? more

Best BBQ in town 9/7/2008

The address is 2511 Cottage Grove and the food was great. Best ribs and brisket I have had in a long time. THe place was small and crowded but got food out fast and hot. Free corn bread was a plus also. Went there after reading the Datebook review and had a great time. Staff was friendly and had a smile on face even with all the people waiting. I suggest getting there early or later in day. Again great FOOD and great atmosphere. Pros: great ribs and brisket more

I never knew you could make meat fatty and dry at the same time!!! TERRIBLE!!! 7/7/2008

I saw the news of this opening in the Register and thought I'd give it a try. Not sure what championships he's won, but clearly there wasn't any competition. Brisket was tough, dry and fatty, ribs were overcooked and had no smoke flavor, and the sides were terrible. For the money (it ain't cheap, folks!), I'll go pretty much anywhere else first before I'd waste money here again. Tasted like sugared up Cookie's BBQ Sauce to me; like the other posters said, it tasted like candy. Pros: Right down the street from Uncle Wendell's. Does that count? Cons: Too expensive for far subpar food. more

GREAT BBQ - big thumbs up! 6/12/2008

Very refreshing to have a great bbq place in Des Moines! I visited the new restaurant on cottage grove this week . The staff was so friendly and even gave me a tour of the kitchen! I was excited when I couldnt find a microwave and thrilled that they were cutting brisket to order! Sauce was a little sweet, but other than that, all of my bbq was SPOT ON. Pros: friendly atmosphere, great food Cons: sauce too sweet more

Nuked food, avoid the chicken! 6/11/2008

The chiken tasted like it had been nuked and the sauce was way to sweet. My friend had the beef and said it had been smoked fast not slow and he could tell. It made us want to go to Ingersoll and fight the wait at Uncle Wendell's. Not worth trying again. more

Very disappointing food, not worth the price at all!!! 5/17/2008

I'm not sure what it takes to win a BBQ competition, but evidently not good BBQ! As an avid fan of BBQ and someone who has eaten at every BBQ plane in Des Moines that I know of, I found their ribs to be terrible, their pork to be disappointing, and their sauce to be way too sweet for even a KC style sauce. I definitely wouldn't recommend them as a caterer, especially since their prices are so high! Pros: At least as a caterer, I guess you can choose to not use him Cons: Just not good BBQ!!! And Woody was very smug! more
