Woodmans.. Not Worth the Hype!! 8/13/2007

To make it short, we are from southern MA near Cape Cod and know a quality seafood dish when we have one.. We purchased the fried clam plate at Woodmans in Essex MA. It comes with onion rings and fries and we also purchased a side of a 1/2 doz clam cakes.. The clams were very TINY and lacked flavor, the onion rings were tasty but very greasy, the fries were the frozen type at best and the clam cakes were burned, very greasy and tasted HORRIBLE!! I personally would never go back. Do yourself a favor and spend your hard-earned money elsewhere! Pros: People friendly & nice atmosphere Cons: As mentioned in the review.. Food was poor. more

Not really the best seafood place 8/5/2005

This place is just overrated. Not worth it. Spend your money someplace else. 1. Clam chowder taste like water 2. Lobster roll real small for the price you're paying. 17.95 3. Lobster for 14.95 a pound.. Too expensive 4. Fried Clam 20.95. O.K but still too expensive overall i didnt think this place was that good. more

Love Woodman's! 11/20/2004

We really love Woodman's - it's a must-do thing every year that we visit that area. I had never heard of fried lobster before my son introduced us to it at Woodman's - it's awesome! Definitely not the place for a romantic dinner - but surely the place for a hungry seafood lover! more

Great clams! 6/26/2004

This place has some great clams! The tartar sauce was awesome! I thought I could only eat Jasper White's sauce. In fact, when I came to woodman's, I stopped by Summer shack and bought some tartar sauce. I tried Woodman's and it was as great as Jasper's!. The chowder was excellent and the fried chicken was finger licking good! Pros: food, price, parking more

Birthplace of Fried Clams! 10/4/2003

Had lunch at Woodman's this afternoon during my vacation to Boston. Have had a craving for fried clams for the last two years of living on the West coast so a trip was in order. Started off with the chowda, which was very good, lots of clams and potatoes in a mildy creamy base. Lunch was a heaping plate of clam bellies in a light batter and some decent fries and rings. There is no ambiance but when you've been around this long, there's no need for frills. Best way to enjoy this food is outside at a picnic table.... Pros: Decent Fried Clams more

Editorial
  • In Short
Beach bums and tourists flock year-round to Woodman's, which touts itself as the home of the fried clam. Besides the addictive house specialty, scallops, haddock and shrimp are also thrown in the fryer. Popular choices also include boiled lobster and lobster rolls. Exubertant teens man the registers, and the no-frills main dining room can be hectic on weekends, when noisy families jockey for tables (many diners don't know about the quieter upstairs dining area).
