Woodlawn Cemetery is a surprisingly nice place to spend an afternoon. I first ventured up there because graveyards spook me out and I was in the mood for a little spookiness, but on that account I ended up quite disappointed. On the other hand, however, I had a lovely afternoon strolling along the wide, winding paths and looking at all the old headstones, statues and mausoleums. I think that I read somewhere that Woodlawn Cemetery has a larger variety of trees than Central Park, which I believe, there were certainly more lawns, trees and bushes than I'd been around in a while!
The Cemetery offers a series of tours, from Victorian Statuary to the famous figures buried on the grounds. This year I went on the Nighttime Halloween Walking Tour, which highlights some of the spookier stories in the cemetery. You can even put together your own group and plan a private tour.
Please remember, however, that Woodlawn is still a functioning cemetery and be respectful of the dead and their loved ones who may be visiting them.
