We were lucky enough to be referred to this gem (yes - pun intended) of a store through a previous, and I'm sure future, customer. My boyfriend and I searched and searched through all of the chain and online jewelry stores for a unique engagement ring. We wanted something that stood out from the crowd but would be classic enough to last our lifetime and hopefully be passed to future generations. I was fortunate enough to have a fourth generation diamond wedding band to use as the start for our piece, though you don't have to have any idea of what type of you would like going in. Travis and his staff will guide you through the design process. We purchased a green Richard Homer sapphire to use as the center stone. If you haven't seen his gem work you must stop by the store to see some of the pieces that have his stones set in them. Truly magical! Travis was able to use a bezel setting to set our sapphire as the centerpiece in the band by cutting it in half. You would never know that we combined an 80 year old piece with something completely new and modern. The ring is a visual seamless blend. One of our concerns before going to talk about a custom piece of jewelry was budget. We never thought we could afford a custom piece. Travis is able to work with nearly any budget to create a unique and special piece that you will love for a lifetime. Buying our wedding rings from Travis was a wonderful experience. He listened to what we wanted and gave us great advice. William Travis has the coolest jewelry I have ever seen (and I shop a lot!). Last year my boyfriend of 10 years and I decided that it was time to take the plunge and get engaged. We begin looking at jewelry stores around the triangle, including several independent designers and were not very excited about any of the rings/settings that we were finding. I knew I wanted something out of the ordinary, but that would stand the test of time in terms of quality, style, and design. Eventually we made it in to William Travis Jewelry, and we were blown away! Immediately I fell in love with a beautiful dome bezel set sapphire ring, but we really wanted a yellow diamond as the center stone. Within days Travis had brought in several stones for us to choose from, and when those were not exactly what we wanted, he tried again. The diamond we selected was absolutely gorgeous, and the ring was completed in just a few weeks time. It is amazing! Next we sat down with Travis to design our wedding bands, and he completely understood my vision of the set. We always felt like our ideas were being heard, and never felt pressure to change our designs, or spend above our means. Additionally, I have purchased two beautiful stands of colored pearls for my mother (as a thank you gift for all her wedding planning!), and she truly loves them. After going to several jewelers and not being satisfied with their problem solving skills and how the final product was going to look, I made an appointment to see William Travis as I had heard that he is a very creative jeweler. And I am so happy I did. I had an old ring that my mother wore when she died and I wanted it made into a pendant. William sat down with me, drew a couple of options and came up with a solution that created a beautiful piece and one that doesn't look like a ring which was converted into a pendant. He is an extremely talented jeweler and his work is simply beautiful. His staff is exceptionally courteous and helpful and William is a joy to work with. After a couple of weeks I called to see if would be possible to have the pendant ready ahead of schedule as I wanted to be able to wear it on the first anniversary of my mother's death. (I didn't tell them this was the reason.) They were happy to oblige and when they needed to make a slight adjustment, they did it while I waited. If you have an old piece of jewelry that needs to be repaired, or if you are looking for an award winning design, I highly recommend William and his team. I do not recommend William Travis Jeweler. My fiance purchased her wedding band at this ""establishment"" and the jeweler told her that he would use wax casting to create her ring (ring has unique engraving). Apparently wax casting would have provided a better quality ring with deeper, more precise engraving. After agreeing to wax casting the jeweler went ahead and ordered a platinum band and engraved the ring to match our specifications. This process yielded a substandard ring. Do not use this jeweler! I purchased my wedding band at Grimball's (also in Chapel Hill) and received excellent service from their professional staff. I recommend Grimball's. Cons: Terrible customer service. Dishonesty. more
