Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge 12/2/2006

The Wildlife Refuge found in the Wichita Mountains of Oklahoma is worth a drive to view. You, however, are the visitor and the animals are the permanent residents so you must honor them at all times. Elk, Buffalo, and Long Horn Cattle roam free. It makes for some wonderful picture taking and with a little research it is a very educational treat. There is a visitors center that supplys more opportunities to learn about the area. You will find the visitors center by following these directions. If traveling from Oklahoma City take I-44 south to the Medicine Park/Highway 49 exit. Go West 14 miles to the junction of State Highway 115 and Highway 49. If traveling from Lawton, take US Highway 62 west to the Cache exit and go North 6 miles. We spent quite a bit of time in the visitor center viewing and snapping pictures of the wildlife exhibits including 2 buffalo. They have a small gift shop where many educational items can be purchased. There is no charge to use the visitor center and plenty of parking is available. more
