Ok, Here's the deal. I lived in Chicago only for a short 3 years. The biggest thing about the Chi is the food. I love a cago style dog. mmm nothing better. Wholly Joes is bas...

Not so good 7/18/2011

Been there 3 times, and have spent a LOT of time in the Windy City, so will most likely not to go back. First visit, we had the dogs. Not bad, but way under spiced, actually, bland. And frozen fries? Please. 2nd visit, was the deep dish pizza. Please...a chunk of gooey greasy mess, with no taste. It doesnt even compare to the WORST deep dish in Chi-Town. 3rd visit, our worst, was the beef sandwich. I like mine dipped, which was fine, however, the gravy is watery and has no flavor. The beef itself was tasteless and tough. And even with the dip, the bottom roll was rock hard. I couldnt even finish it. My wife ordered a tamale for an appetizer for $2, and it was served as a microwaved prepackaged product with a side of prepackaged hot sauce, just like you get at a gas station. AND, it tasted like dog food. The dogs are just so-so, and other than that, nothing good or like Chicago in anyway. more

Best Italian Beef 5/3/2010

This place is great at what they do. The dogs and Italian Beef are great and a must get. I stumbled across this place and have been a loyal customer there. Pros: Food and Service are great more

Get the Italian Beef!!! 3/31/2008

I just recently found this place and I was pleasantly surprised by the Italian beef sandwich. If you've had one in dowtown Chicago and are looking for the real deal here in Columbus, try this place. The service is good and I'll definitely be back. more

Not what I expected! 1/11/2008

Ok, Here's the deal. I lived in Chicago only for a short 3 years. The biggest thing about the Chi is the food. I love a cago style dog. mmm nothing better. Wholly Joes is based off of the Chicago based Portillo's Hot Dogs However, this place can not compare. Now, Joes is a resturant but A Chicago style it is not. If you've never eaten Chicago food you wont know the difference. You'll believe it great because it is different. Dont get me wrong my first visit I met the owner, very nice man but its been about two to three years since that first visit and I have not returned. I would rather fly or drive to Chicago for the real thing and Yes, Ive dont that multible times. If maybe they would try to use what everyone uses in chicago it be a great place to eat. Like the same meat and also use only the fresh ingredients. Well, thats my view on it. more

Italian Roast Beef, Deep Dish pizza. poor service 11/17/2007

The Italian Roast Beef is good. To me an authentic Chicago hot dog has to have fresh cut fries, not frozen crinkle cust ones. The pizza is good, but not spectacular. If you order pizza, the service is stupid. They give you a receipt with no number on it and then bring out the pizza calling a number? I think the waitress gets the number out of a random number generator and she looks confused when nobody speaks up. The men behind the counter barely speak English and they are the ones on the PA announcing orders are ready to confused customers. The last time the waitress didn't want to give us our pizza because we didn't know our number and we were the only ones in the restaurant. I don't think I have ever seen anything more ridiculous in a restaurant. Pros: Roast Beef Cons: Tiny TVs, poor service more

Food I can get at a gas station 8/17/2007

Ate there for the very first and last time today....salad and a tamale - both were presented as something I can get at any gas station that has a small eatery in it. The salad was small for $3.25 and made the salads at Wendy's and McDonald's look like gourmet salads. The tamale - I was appalled - it was served IN THE MICROWAVE WRAPPER like you buy in the store and go home to nuke! Do you think maybe they could have taken the time to UNWRAP it, nuke it and serve it in a paper container or something?\r \r Nope - once is enough for me. Pros: None that I could see Cons: Food from a container - cheaper at Speedway more

my favorite pizza in Columbus 8/13/2007

As a Chicago native, I can attest that this place is authentic. The deep dish pizza is mouth-watering good. I took a trip back to Chicago a few months ago and had Giordano's, and I remembered thinking I actually prefer Wholly Joe's. \r \r The Italian Beefs are good. Not great, but good. Everyone from Chicago has their own unique concoction for Italian beef. I like my creation better than Wholly Joes, but it's still a good sandwich. \r \r The hot dogs are authentic Chicago. Never had anything else on the menu. more

wholly joes good but not perfect 7/6/2007

We have lived in Chicago area our entire lives. Yes, Wholly Joes is good, but not perfect. Yes, the ingredients come from Chicago ""area"" but don't compare to the Chicago area local pizza places such as Home Run Inn or Giordanos. The Italian Beef definitely does not compare to places back home. Those of you who want to open up a Chicago Hot Dog/Pizza place can also do so by contacting suppliers in the Chicago area. It's the sausage and sauce that make the difference in Chi Town pizza. We need more places here in the Columbus area. We may do so ourselves. \r \r Giordanos and Home Run Inn both can be ordered and delivered frozen. The best beef can be ordered from carms beef. They have a carms web site. \r Try these before you rave about Wholly Joes! more

Amazing, Authentic Chicago-style Hot Dogs! 5/16/2007

Ever since my last trip to Chicago I have been longing for an authentic Chicago-Style hot dogs. Ever since my recent change of jobs I have driven past Wholly Joe's but never thought about it until doing a search for cheap eats on Citysearch and read about it. Went there for the first time and plan on going back soon. The employees were friendly and the service was fast. The only complaint I have is that the relish is not neon green, anyone who has been to Chicago knows what I mean. If you are looking for good food, fast service and a friendly environment then Wholly Joe's is the place for you. more

Delicious food you can't get any where else 1/1/2007

This place is awesome I've been there a few times now, and I must say the food is great. They have something for everyone. Sandwiches, Pizza ,Cakes and more.. Kids love it and that is WONDERFUL!! \r If you want pizza ORDER AHEAD!!! Pros: Two Thumbs up!! Excellent enviorment Cons: alittle wait time to order more

Recommended for one thing only - Chicago Style Pizza 11/2/2006

I have tried the burgers, the dogs, the fires and the rings. The only thing that tastes even remotely fresh is the Chicago style pizza, which takes them 45 minutes to make. The fries and the rings !! Forget about them, they pour them out of a huge plastic bag frozen and quick fry them. Tastes like Mom's Or-Ida's off the cookie sheet ... You all know what I'm talking about.... I'm sure your mom made them too. Uuuch....Burgers... Uuuch..not their area of expertise... Dogs... well.. the're beef dogs so better than some, but you can get these at Giant Eagle and cook them on the grill better.\r \r But the deep dish Pizza... now that's a good one... Try it with pep and sausage and a bottle of Chianti to match the spice... Umm wonderful.. and the cheese is the real deal... Real mozza !!! And some of the best I've tried in Columbus. So.. that's the only thing I can recommend... more

Great Hot Dogs and italian beef, pizza if you have the time 9/18/2006

Good grub!! That simple, very decent meal for the dollar. Why not support a local family business instead of McPuke or another chain. The food is excellent and they have a diverse menu that you don't see anywhere else! The kids love it and so do I. They could use more locations, Pros: plenty of parking, available seating, prompt service Cons: only one location more

AUTHENTIC Chicago Dog-are we in Wrigley Field! 3/7/2006

We lived outside Chicago for years and love Chicago Style Hot Dogs. They are really different at first bite... we had no basis for this experience! We missed them until we found Wholly Joes! Now we go a distance to enjoy them. If you've never had one, try it with or without Sport Peppers. DO NOT TRY TO RE-DRESS THESE DOGS WITH CONEY SAUCE OR YOU'LL SCREW UP THE TASTE. Do keep an open mind because it is not what you expect. If you don't like the first one, give it another try... some kids hate pizza the first time too. You could acquire a taste for them. The fries are great!. I'm told the Italian Beef is the same, but I love the dogs and have not stuffed myself with one yet. If the rest of the menu is as good the dogs and fries, you can't go wrong! Pros: AUTHENTIC Chicago Dog, Great Fries, Great Italian Beef more

Not the worst I've had 2/8/2006

I've been here a few times now and really can't complain too much. They do sometimes take a little too long to get your order done though. I've tried several items and nothing jumps out as to-die-for. The chili dogs are pretty average. The burger's taste equals that of a Burger King at best. However, the fries were decent. Would I recommend this place? Only if you're tired of eating at the same handful of restaurants. more

This is good? 11/22/2005

This was the worst burger I've had the displeasure of eating in some time. The fries and rings were frozen and tasted as if they'd been fried in grease way past its best days. Iced tea was the ""bagged"" kind so popular in cafeterias now. I was with friends who had a polish and a beef sandwich which they claimed to have liked. Regardless, avoid the awful burger. Pros: fast Cons: small tables, expensive, poor quality food more

chicago native 11/13/2005

i love having a real hot dog or beef im from chicago so this is a real treat its a long drive from whitehall but definitly worth it more

Worth the drive! 9/14/2005

We love Wholly Joe's! Even though I prefer them sans cucumber, the hot dogs are fantastic (I especially like the kosher beef dogs) The beef sandwiches are delicious too, and the au jus tastes home-made, unlike that at other places we've been to. They also have an extensive range of sodas - Coke and Pepsi and loads more. I agree that it would be great if there were other locations. It's a bit of a drive from here in Hilliard, but it's guarenteed to be a great meal that's easy on the wallet. Pros: Clean, nice atmos., Great food 7 service, Superb value Cons: Location more

Neato Bud! 8/15/2005

This was a great lunch and would make a good dinner. The 1950's style it was totally fun. Be careful because the pizza is only serived in the evening and on weekends but everything I have had on the menu was great. Besides that anytime to dine for 15.00 and leave full I am having a great day. Pros: Price, Taste, Feel Cons: Hard to fine, Funny Ordering Set Up more
