Beautifull building..way over priced food/wine. Service is snobby..not a good value.

whitney downtown detroit 4/13/2012

6 of us went to brunch - the worst food ever, a wedding party and all others went through the same brunch line. Food was poor quality, warm, not hot, desserts mediocre and none of us will ever go again. It was a Christmas outing, the cost was pricey, the food very poor. We had a nice waiter who kept our mimosa glasses full - but the food was not worth the $$$$ - A BIG disappointment to say the least. more

Anniversary occasion .. Never again!! 12/27/2011

My husband wanted to surprise me on our wedding anniversary ,,we went in & atmosphere was nice,, started by ordering soup,,I got mushroom and cauliflour and my husband ordered sea food soup both were terrible,,mine was tastless more like hot salty water and my husband's was more like tasteless baby food,, he was not able to eat it,, then we ordered a starter some kind of green beans and duck meat ""Duck Confi"" ,, worst taste I have ever tried. the duck was saturated with salt & had strong infested smell. at that point we could not take it any more,,we called the waitress complaining about the food .. she was very nice & apologized and asked if we want to speak to a manager,, my husband said if the entrees have the same bad quality then we want to leave ,,she said no the food is good,, so we got steaks for my husband and fish for me. Well the food was burned and the green aspergous looked dehydrated and old. steaks were over cooked almost burned.. and both were not edible,,,, very disappointed with the quality of food,,, too bad such a nice place had such a bad quality food,, never going there again,,,, waste of money and ruining of a nice memory.\r more

DISAPPOINTING AND HORRIBLE FOOD 4/1/2011

What a disappointing food experience! I'm actually going to write a personal letter to the manager after I finish this review.\r All of our food was flavorless. I could have done a better job in my kitchen. We headed for Happy Hour and stayed for dinner. \r The shrimp cocktail was boring- just cold shrimp and cocktail sauce. \r Spinach salad was the best thing i ate all night and was just so-so.\r The tuna was served with a dry fig chutney that did not compliment the flavor of the tuna and the sausage was good, but looked like it was thrown on a plate and served with some unappetizing mustard.\r I had the chicken: DRY, LAVORLESS and the garlic mash potatoes were cold.\r My hubby had the steak: he said the quality was horrid, and it was drenched in some sort of sauce. \r We were not impressed. The atmosphere and our fun bartender were the only great things. The food was a HUGE waste of money. We actually ended up eating again somewhere else because we hardly touch anything we ate.\r Don't waste the money eating there. Head for the bar and order up the 1/2 price drinks, enjoy the atmosphere then head to McDonald's for a better meal than you'll get at the Whitney.\r So disappointing!!!!!!! more

Very Disappointing 9/24/2010

My boyfriend took me to the Whitnew a few days ago for my birthday. We have been before for drinks in the Ghost bar and spent this past New Years there, but this was our first time dining. Reservations were made and when we arrived our table wasn't ready. No problem, we headed up to the Ghost bar for a pre-dinner drink. When we got up there the bartender informed us that our first drink was on the house. We were both impressed and loved the way the evening was starting out. After 30 min we had the bartender call down and check on our table and they said they were getting it ready. So, we paid for our drinks and left, only to realize later that she charged us for an extra drink (a $10 drink!) We were seated in the main dining area, right in front of the main window which we though was nice. It took a while for our waitress to come to the table and get our drink order, then even longer for her to bring the bottle of wine. We started off witht he bruchetta. I do not recommend it. The ""bread"" part was actually breadded eggplant that only tasted like the oil it was fried in. There was absolutely no flavor to it at all. The salad course was okay...and okay is not what I'm looking for when I go to the Whitney. I ordered the filet, it was a little over-cooked for the med-rare that I ordered and again it was lacking flavor. My boyfriend ordered the New York (by the way they were out of the Lamb and Chicken dishes that we were originally going to order). His steak was half overcooked, like they had let it lie on one side too long on the grill. The side dishes were sub par. Dessert was like something you could get at Denny's. \r \r Overall, the service was bad and the food was worse. The experience also included several fruit flies bothering us throughout the night. The waitress did explain to us that they had a new chef and he was in the process of changing the menu, but that is no excuse for putting out bad food and poor service. We will not be back. more

Worst service I have had in my adult life 5/15/2010

It took 3 1/2 hours for salads, entree, and desert. There was 27 minutes when we had no water or drinks. Our server would not even look our way when making her rounds. The water/bus boy ended up taking our drink orders and gave us our desert menus after waiting 15 minutes for them. The desert was overpriced and tasted like it came out a freezer at the grocery store. The fish (salmon) was dry and small portioned for the $29 you pay. The chicken consisted of a half-breast of dry chicken with about 1lb of bread pudding and 2 baby carrots. The manager did credit part of our bill but it was a truly bad evening on what was to be a special night. They should be ashamed to call themselves The Whitney. Pros: Valet was good Cons: Service was horrible, food was dry and bland more

Just Getting Better... 4/30/2010

It had been years since we dined at The Whitney. Even so, I think its better than its ever been. The food was fantastic. We had young children with us and the chef was kind enough to make them a special meal (off menu!). The historic mansion has always been beautiful but i think The Whitney just needed a re-fresh. Congrats...you got it. Pros: Great Food, Beautiful Place more

i had better food and service at silver spoon in Allen Park 1/8/2010

It was my first and will be my last. My salad Brie had very little dressing, my scallops were under cooked and only had 3. Asked for tartar sauce, didn't have any.The wife's steak was well done she asked for medium.we asked for some steak sauce,we were told that they can't ask for that, the cheif wouldn't like it. By the time our main coarse came we didn't have any silverware, so we had to wait till the waitress brought us some. The waitress acted as if we were bothering her if i flagged her down to ask for something. We were in the dinning room area and the majority of people in there were just drinking no eating, sounded like the neighbor hood bar, if the waitress stood at the other end of the table i could not hear her talking to me, thats how loud it was in the dinning room we were in. It was a real waste of money and time all they have to offer is there NAME. Pros: there are not any Cons: bad service and bad food more

Impeccable 5/17/2009

This building has amazing architecture, amazing ambiance and unbeliveable service. I recenlty visited The Whitney for dinner and our service and food was exquisite. I had the scallop dish and the presentation was beautiful and the taste was savory and delicious. My fiance had the filet and it was not only cooked to his desired temperature but it was seasoned to perfection. \r \r To say the least our experience was wonderful and we will return for our anniversary again in September. Pros: Food and service more

Poor Management damages the Whitney's Reputation 3/16/2009

The beauty of this amazing mansion and restaurant and its well prepared cuisine are damaged by inept and self-involved management who seem oblivious to the importance of customer satisfaction. Pros: Excellent food and wait staff Cons: Poor, inept management more

Information for Travelers 3/10/2007

The Whitney closed on February 18, 2007 for a change of ownership/management and remodeling. If you are interested in visiting this beautiful mansion, please call first. It's my understanding that it will be re-open soon! When I was there, the atmosphere, service and food were excellent. It is truly the most romantic atmosphere ever and when my husband and I got home, the atmosphere continued and our son was conceived! Is that TMI???? Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere Cons: Prices were outrageous and the portions were rather small more

I love it 5/25/2004

I have been here many time but only once for dinner, I love this place highly romatic and great desserts. In fact we had dinner I had dessert then went upstairs to the paino bar and later had another dessert. It is truly the best love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

truly amazing 5/4/2004

I visited the Whitney on May 1, 2004 and had an experience unlike any other. The restaraunt itself if absolutely gorgeous. The service was the best I have ever had. The food was incredible... in fact, my boyfriend and I both got steak, and we were able to cut it with our butter knives. Everything was amazing and we could not have asked for anything better. This place is a must visit when going to Detroit. HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED!!! Pros: everything!!! more

Way over rated! 3/15/2004

I went with my husband to Whitney to celebrate Valentine's Day. Other than the setting, nothing was impressive, at least not worth $250-300. The food was nothing special, while the service and the wine was terrible. As a matter of fact, Denny's provides you with a better explanation of the meal and their drinks!!!! The waitress couldn't tell us the difference between different sauces and the characteristics of different wines. When we told the waitress that the wine is bad, she tasted it and she told us that there was nothing wrong with it. We had to get the manager to taste the wine, who agreed with us. Whoever thinks that the food and atmosphere at Whitneys' is worth the huge price tag, they need to eat at restaurants outside of Detroit. Actually the Whitney owners need to come up with better food, wine & service Pros: the mansion Cons: , wine, staff more

NOT GOOD! 3/9/2004

I took my wife to the Whitney to celebrate the New Year 2003. Probably the best historic environment I have dined at in the US. The service, like many so-called fine dining restaurants in the Midwest, is simply not there. Detroit is not what it was, gone are the patrons who could challenge the restaurant to rise to the occassion - that, or they are all in the suburbs now. We stood around in the entrance for five minutes before being greeted - I could only ascribe it to rudeness. There was something wrong with the wine - I can't remember what. Our courses came either right on top of each other or after extended waits. We were served our main course right at the stroke of midnight - this for a 9PM seating that should have allowed us to be enjoying Champagne instead. No recourse given despite complaints. Cons: , Poor Management, Poor Hosting more

Not worth the money. 1/21/2004

I have been there three times over the past few year. I have no intention of ever going back. A five year old would still be hungry after the tiny servings you are given. The only nice thing I can say about the Whitney is they have great atmosphere. The service has become quite disappointing too! more

Wedding brunch 7/5/2003

I hosted a wedding brunch at the Whitney in March for my daughter. We were very pleased with the food, the service, and the atmosphere. The staff went out of their way to make it a very memorable experience. It was definitely a great choice for a family celebration! Pros: great food, valet parking, flowers and music more

A Memorable Wedding Brunch 3/20/2003

We had a small wedding brunch at the Whitney on Sunday March 16, 2003. It was absolutely wonderful! Our brunch took place in the Music room which was a perfect size for 30 people. The food and service were exceptional. The interior of the Whitney is exquisite and the staff made our day truly special. What a beautiful place for such a special day! Pros: friendly staff, great food, reasonable prices more

Brunch was divine! 1/26/2003

This is a wonderful spot for a relaxing Sunday brunch - the food is good, the service is wonderful, and the beautiful surroundings can't be beat. Be advised that this is a leisurely affair, though -- it will take you almost two hours to get through the four delicious courses of food, so make sure you save this treat for a day on which you have time to relax and enjoy the experience. more

Love it! 12/3/2002

The Whitney has the best brunch ever! Beautiful surroundings, and great food. The Sunday brunch is better than the dinner. more

Elegance 11/24/2002

Truly worth it!! Elegant, fabulous menu, service and ambiance. Wonderful after the theatre. more
