This vet is amazing. They helped me through both of my ferrets cancer and passing. The staff is great, the vets are caring, and the prices are very fair. They were always there to help, even after hours (both of my ferrets needed emergency care after hours, one even at midnight!). I just can't say enough about this place. They truly care about the animal. Unlike most other vets, they aren't out just to make a buck, but to really help pets and owners. They will work with you on prices and treatment options and will go above and beyond to care for your animal. I've only ever dealt with the 2 ferret vets, but they were so great. Best Vet by far 10/27/2010

West End is an amazing place to take your pet! We take both of our rescue dogs there, they were even nice enough to look at one of our new dogs before we had even switched his information over to them and it also wasn't even his appointment! (We were getting our other dog looked at at the time) We also took our sick guinea pig there and although he didn't make it we felt so much better knowing that he was in their care. They even mailed us a card of their condolences for his passing. We're currently going to take two strays we found yesterday up there to get looked at. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I wouldn't trust any other vet! more

By far the best in every way 12/18/2008

After having decided to take our ferret to Dr. Cottrell because of her exceptional nationally known reputation, we soon learned that the drive from Atlanta was more than well worth it. Not only did we receive for our Cindy the best care she could have possibly gotten, but we met an entire clinic of incredible people. Everyone was kind, compassionate and very knowledgeable with regard to their job in the clinic. We can not praise Dr. Cottrell, Dr. Schirmer, Iaon and everyone else in the clinic enough for their works in every area of animal care taking. They are involved in many aspects of animal care from the clinic, to rescue and environmental care. Thank you so much for all that you do. more

THE BEST 3/28/2006

If you have a ferret and live in the Gainesville area you want to go to West End. Dr. Cottrell is a top class vet and I wouldn't take my "babies" any where else!! The staff is friendly and welcoming. more

Find your perfect match...dog, cat or bat :) 11/14/2005

West End Animal hospital is a little off the beaten path out in Newberry. I went there to look for a dog for my daughter. My son-in-law wanted to get her a small breed . He prefered one that was rescued since there are so many unwanted pets. After searching every other place we found our way out to west end and found "Pipo". He was perfect. They were wonderful throughout the adoption process making sure we were a good match for him and he for us. They made sure he was in good phsical condition and we were able to take him to her that day. The price was low for such a wonderful companion. The staff is knowledgeable. They also offer all kinds of vet care for pets from dogs to bats. Highly recommended. more

  • We believe our animal hospital rates as one of the best in Alachua County in the ability to provide the highest level of medical care for our patients. In April 2010 we were accredited by The American Animal Hospital Association , a recognition of having achieved the highest standard of veterinary care. There are 16 animal hospitals in Alachua County and surrounding areas; only 4 are AAHA accredited. We also have some features that make us unique: West End Animal Hospital was established by Dr. Deborah Cottrell in 1986. We treat a wide variety of animals, including dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, rodents, small marsupials, non-human primates, and a variety of other exotic animals as well. Our Doctors have over 50 years combined experience. Our state of the art facility includes two surgery suites, an emergency ward, treatment areas, boarding kennels with separate areas for cats and dogs (indoor or air-conditioned indoor/outdoor), an extensive in-house pharmacy, and a digital x-ray suite (one of few privately owned fully digital systems in central Florida). Our cutting edge in-house laboratory allows us to obtain fast diagnostic results when your pet needs it the most, rather than the usual 24 to 48 hour wait associated with off-site labs. We offer our clients cozy exam rooms with in-room checkout, cable TV, and free WiFi internet access. We see after-hour emergencies, for our established clients, enabling you to see a doctor that is familiar with your pet. We ran a program called "Operation PitNip" that provided free spays and neuters for Pit Bulls for seven years. By the time we ended the program in April of 2012, we had spayed and neutered over 1750 pit-bulls for free. We have raised and donated over $40,000 to animal rescue groups via our Poker For Pets charity program. We are involved in bat rescue, rehabilitation, and education. In June 2015, we installed a new, large bat house in our retention pond. This house can hold 25,000 bats, so we're hoping for full occupancy in the fall.
